How to Commission a Custom Funko Pop
A custom Pop is a one-off, fan-made figure in the Funko Pop style, made by an independent artist. Here's how to order one without surprises: what to send, what to ask, what it roughly costs, how long it takes, and how to pick a maker. It's built from 89 makers and 17,417 pieces in The Missing Pop.
Step by step
Pick the character and gather references
Save front, side and back images of the exact outfit, arc or version you want. Add two or three customs you like the style of, so the maker can see the look you mean. Check the character on The Missing Pop first: there may already be a model or a finished custom you can point to.
Decide what you are buying
A full custom is sculpted (or made from a bought model), printed, painted and boxed. You can also buy just a 3D sculpt, just a paint job on a print you already have, or just a custom box. Decide on extras up front: box, base, glow paint, LED, case.
Shortlist and vet two or three makers
Look for recent posts, finished photos (not only renders), clear credits for who sculpted and who painted, and buyers tagging their delivered pieces. See how to vet a maker below.
Ask for a quote
Send one clear message with your references and the questions below. Makers set their own prices and many quote per piece, so ask the artist rather than guessing from someone else's post.
Agree on everything in writing
Price, deposit, what happens if either side cancels, timeline, number of revisions, and shipping. Keep it in the same message thread.
Approve progress photos
Most makers send the sculpt or render for approval before printing, then the paint before shipping. Changes are easy at the sculpt stage and hard after paint.
Pay the balance and ship
Ask for tracked shipping and a box protector. Outside the maker's country, expect import fees on your side.
What to ask the maker
- Price for the figure, and for the box, base and any extras
- Deposit amount, and whether it is refundable
- Timeline: when they can start and roughly when it ships
- Whether they sculpt it themselves or use a model from another artist (and who)
- How many revision rounds are included, and at which stages
- Whether it is resin-printed, a repaint of an official Pop, or hand-sculpted
- Shipping cost to your country, tracking, and who pays import fees
- Whether they use AI anywhere in the design
A message you can copy:
Hi [maker]! I'd love a custom of [character] from [fandom], [outfit / version]. References: [links or images] Could you tell me: • your price and deposit • when you could start, and a rough ship date • shipping to [your country] • how many revisions are included Thank you!
How much does a custom Funko Pop cost?
Rough public averages only. Every maker sets their own price, so ask the artist for a quote.
What moves the price: a brand-new sculpt vs an existing model, hair and armor detail, effects (flames, energy, weapons), size (standard, 6-inch, 10-inch), a hand-drawn box, and shipping. Some makers on The Missing Pop show their own starting price on their profile; when they don't, ask.
How long does it take?
There's no standard; it depends on the maker's queue and on what you order. A paint job on a model that already exists is usually the fastest. A new sculpt adds design and approval rounds before anything is printed. Ask for a rough ship date before you pay, and ask how they'll keep you updated.
Want it for a birthday or holiday? Say so in your first message. Some makers offer a rush fee; many book up months ahead.
How to vet a maker
- Recent work. Every maker in The Missing Pop has posted since 2025-10-31; each profile shows the last post we saw.
- Finished photos, not only renders. A 3D render shows the model, not the paint. Learn the difference in painted vs 3D render vs concept.
- Credits. Many customs are collaborations: one artist sculpts, another prints and paints, a third designs the box. Good makers credit the sculptor. Ask whose model they'll use.
- Delivered pieces. Look for buyers tagging the figures they received.
- Clear terms. Deposit, refund, timeline and revisions written down before you pay. Use a payment method with buyer protection.
- AI use. Pieces from makers who use AI in their work or images are flagged in the directory. Ask about their process if it matters to you.
Painted vs 3D-printed customs
3D-printed customs start from a digital sculpt, printed in resin, then sanded, primed and hand-painted. Any pose, hair or outfit is possible, and most customs here are made this way. See how custom Pops are made.
Repaints and kitbashes start from an official vinyl Pop: the artist repaints it, sculpts small changes, or swaps parts. They are usually simpler, but limited to what the base figure allows.
Hand-sculpted customs are built up in clay or putty, sometimes over a base. Each one is unique.
Whichever it is, ask what material it's made in and whether it's sealed. Resin is detailed but can chip if dropped.
Ordering from another country
- Makers in The Missing Pop are all over the world. Ask for the shipping cost to your country up front; it can be a big part of the total.
- Ask for a tracking number and, for expensive pieces, insurance.
- Import duties and VAT are usually charged to the buyer on delivery, and depend on your country.
- Check the currency of the quote. The directory shows prices in US dollars where a maker lists one.
- Ask how it will be packed: a box protector and padding around the figure.

FAQ
- How much does a custom Funko Pop cost?
- It depends on the maker and the character. As a rough public average, a full custom Pop-style figure runs from about $100 to $800 or more, a 3D sculpt alone about $50–$400, and an STL file $2–$15. Makers set their own prices, so ask the artist for a quote.
- How long does a custom Funko Pop take?
- Ask the maker: it depends on their queue and on whether the character needs a new sculpt. A paint job on an existing model is usually the quickest; a new sculpt plus print, paint and box takes longest. Agree on a rough ship date before you pay a deposit.
- Can I get a custom Funko Pop of myself?
- Many custom makers take personal portrait commissions, so ask them directly. Funko also sells an official build-your-own Pop! Yourself figure. The Missing Pop itself only shows fictional characters and public figures, so you won't find private portraits as examples here.
- Is a custom Funko Pop an official Funko product?
- No. Customs are fan-made, Pop-style figures by independent artists. They are not made, licensed or endorsed by Funko.
- Do custom Pop makers ship internationally?
- Many do. Ask for the shipping cost to your country, a tracking number, and who pays import duties or VAT, which are usually charged to the buyer on delivery.
- Is a 3D-printed custom better than a repainted Pop?
- They are different. A 3D-printed custom is a new sculpt printed in resin, so it can have any pose, hair or outfit. A repaint starts from an official vinyl Pop and changes the paint and small details. Ask the maker which one you are getting.
